Living An Honest Life – Episode 8

Episode 8 features Barbara Wimpee from Milwaukee, WI. Barb is the NSA Chapter leader in Milwaukee for the adult group, as well as leader for the NSA chapter for kids and teens.
I met Barb through social media. We are Face book friends, and she is a regular reader of this blog. We have shared some ideas for use in her kids/teens group in the past.
Barb is a biologist, and is very interested in women’s health issues. So we spend some time exploring women’s health issues as they relate to stuttering, of course.
We also chat about the complexities of being covert. Barb shares how she was “passable” in the fluent world, and also the fear, anxiety and stress that is all too often discovered by the covert trying to be fluent.
Barb further shares about living a life that is honest, career choices, and even mentions a character from Harry Potter.

I’m Barb’s daughter and even *I* learned something new in listening to this! I am constantly surprised that people find stuttering something that can be openly laughed at. I’m proud of my mom for standing up for those too anxious to say something (as even I am sometimes), and for teaching the world that people who stutter are just people. Love the blog and all that you do.

Barb, I appreciated your reflection on your speech therapy experiences. I realize that some stutterers have had similar experiences, which is why they aren’t the biggest fans of Speech Therapists… which is why I am motivated to change that reputation! Thank you for sharing your story and for your continued work with support groups and the graduate programs!

I loved talking with you as well. I feel this whole concept is something special. It feels very powerful and magical, like something is unfolding right before us.
